Piano instruction/piano lessons

We (Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann) offer piano instruction to a wide range of students from children to adults that include preparations for exams (RCM) and competitions. We also offer our expertise assisting in audition preparations for those wishing to pursue professional studies at post secondary institutions.

Piano ensemble

As an international, prize winning piano duo and members of the Canadian Piano Quartet, we enjoy sharing our expertise with students who are interested in piano ensemble repertoire from one piano four hands to two pianos and more! We work with students of all ages as they team up to explore the exciting piano ensemble repertoire.

Composition/Arranging/Theory

An associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre and internationally active composer and arranger, Marcel (Bergmann) offers instruction in composition and arranging, using both, traditional and contemporary techniques and methods (including electronic/computer based media and programmes). Depending on the student’s individual interests, strengths and goals, the range of approaches may vary from working with pencil and manuscript paper to using digital audio workstations such as Garage Band or Logic and music notation software. Combining different tools and possibilities, the student(s) will learn how to input and work with their creative ideas most effectively (using their individual strengths and preferences to) and to optimize the overall workflow and creative process. Where suitable, incorporating additional insights from the areas of music history and melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and formal analysis will enable students to delve into the creative universe(s) of the great composers and to acquire a deeper understanding of a wide range of musical styles and compositional approaches.
In addition, Marcel also offers more theory based classes that focus primarily on formal and harmonic analysis, covering a wide range of composers, styles and approaches. These sessions could be helpful as a general addition to the piano lessons, or more specifically in preparation for theory, harmony, history or form and analysis exams.

Ear Training/Sight Reading

Both, Sight reading and Ear training sessions can be flexibly integrated and tailored around the specific needs of the individual student. Students can/may register for those sessions separately or in combination with piano lessons, where shorter segments (e.g.15 minutes or more) can be added at the end of a piano lesson.
